‘The Mortality of Loved Ones’
I have spent many years shadowing surgeons in and out of the operating theatre to produce paintings on surgery, with a residency last year with the Surgeon's Hall Museum and Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
One of the hardest parts of my job was asking permission to take photos, and draw, those going under the knife, often with family members or friends present. Something that stuck with me and kept me up at night was the look in the eye of the patients family. The realisation of the mortality of someone you love, which is something I find more difficult to perceive than my own.
