Length: 1-4 hours
Players: 4
Required: Pen and paper for each player
Rules: This game must begin at 3:00am in your local time zone. No tricking the system by pretending to live in Australia.
Do not try and bank sleep with an early bedtime. This has to be a raw wake up. One that embraces the dizziness that scrambles your thoughts and clog your brain at that hour.
You might want to prep hot drinks.
Sit at a table, facing each other. Keep your pen and paper in front of you.
Close your eyes. Imagine a thin band of gold warming your heart. Spinning loose, and radiating across the room.
This is your space now. You have entered the world of the Silver Sphere.
The player closest to a light source is Player A. Moonlight trumps any other illumination. Candlelight beats electric.
The one to their right is Player B. Follow clockwise for Players C and D.
Each player has ten minutes to write down elements of a story. You must base these core ideas around three rules:
1. The dreams you had that night before waking.
2. What you can see around you in the gloom. The shapes and the shadows.
3. What noises you can hear, from the creak of the fridge, to the insects outside.
Any idea that fits within these rules is valid.
When the ten minutes are up, begin.
Tell a story around the circle. Enter another world. Your characters must begin under the moonlight. There must be something hunting them down. Looking to devour them.
You may only use the elements found on your pieces of paper.
The morning sun is your one weapon against the hunter. This is not a metaphor. You must carry on telling your story until the first golden rays burn through the window, and bring the game to a close.
If you run out of story elements before sunlight appears, or if a pause in the narrative lasts longer than one minute, you have not survived the night.
Play in the summer, and this will be a gentle ninety minute run into greeting the dawn chorus. Play deep in the winter, and you may find your throat starts to burn before salvation arrives.
Enjoy yourselves. This is your time together, building your new universe. Embrace your tale. You have to work as a team to protect yourselves, and reach sunrise.
Be warned. This part of the night is slippery. Dissimilar to the day. You may hear grunts by the door. Spot eyes at the window. Do not worry. Keep telling your story.
